Soly Herrara

Not our dog
She
would not be touched
by the spirit world
her world is cooked bones
warm bones
she doesn’t catch her own
not for her the wild
catchecism of the prey
of the prayer for the hunt
of the seeking of self
of the wolf
on the mountain
do dogs have souls
or only wolves?

More pastoral for her
long walks with Paula
rolling rolling rolling
on the Crum Creek grass
non-mystical
only physical
not meta only physical
not alpha more beta
only physical

Our male cat
tyre by name
has been misinformed
thinks he is a bengal tiger
just waiting
for the proper height and teeth
our dog believes him
but we, of course,
don’t
We all live in
our own private delusions
still,
some nights,
the growls seem so loud

Dax, the dog
waits for walks
waits for food
waits for sleep
waits to be scratched
to have balls thrown
or other entertainment
has no need of religion
does not know St. Francis
or does not let on to us
if she does

Dax does not sweat
the big questions
Could that be serenity?

Of course I speak for Dax
only in our world
in her world
she speaks for us
hopefully,
she speaks well of us
we’ll never know
not speaking Dog

Wolves know spirit
wild
run
scream
at sky
Not live
with the
long two legs
how can
live with
long two legs
and know spirit

One night
dax will hear spirit
we will hear an open window…..
