Remembering what I drank to forget

Remembering what I drank to forget
It’s always there
that part of your life
you cannot go back and change
that time when something happened
and it cannot be rung back

With me, it’s very simple
it was around my twenty first birthday
with others, it was more
a shooting, a stabbing
a decision to enlist

With me, it’s not much
l was a Junior in a College
with others
it might have been the wrong man
the wrong woman, the wrong challenge

I do not speak of this
even thirty eight years later
I do not speak because I do not know
why I called for them
to come get me…then

I should only add
I remember nothing
until a while later
seeing the deer in the early dawn woods
and remembering myself

Shortly after
came the time
of the Cheese
the Dead Cheese
that bade me live again

lt’s always there
whatever it ………. 7-25 to 8-1-08 revised finally 1/4/23
