Darkness Cannot drive out Darkness

Darkness cannot drive out Darkness.
Only light can do that,
Rev. Raphael Warnock,
newly elected Ga. Senator
quoting Martin Luther King

As we circle around today
to the annual
MLK Day of Protest
Oh wait it’s service
that he was known for
if that was the only he did
then they shot the wrong person
Atlanta, Montgomery, Washington, DC
Memories of a time
of aspiration

2-I was never black
never will be
have not been minoritized
in that way
for the skin I wear
have feared Police
but not expectedly
not daily
have walked on city streets at night
always expecting
to walk my way home

3-The 1-6-21 Patriots
think they have so little
think they have so little
that they have to celebrate their whiteness
’cause it’s all they have
’cause they somehow earned it
’cause it makes them better
makes them bitter
that Blacks are no longer their Slaves

4-Maybe we need a new Union Army
a Rainbow Army
a black and whites together army-
but we must tell ourselves
guns invite us to the darkness
no matter
how we dress it up and dream it.
