Why in 2020

Inspired by Elie Mystal’s article in The Nation

shared by Rich Conti

Why are my and other’s poems

from the nineteen sixties

still too damn relevant

and why is it still a curse in this country

to be any kind of different,

but especially black.

Why haven’t computers changed the world for Peace as promised.

Why do black parents still

have to have “the talk”

with their children.

Why do we even have statues honoring traitors,

where else do they have that.

There is a Boot Monument in

Saratoga National Historic Park\

honoring the major general

who beat the British there,

one Benedict Arnold.

it’s missing his name.

should we honor him, then.

Don’t mention the phrase “the lost cause”

unless you’re speaking of civil rights

which seems to have been lost

unless you’re speaking of free speech rights

of the right to not get shot, of the right-

those are the lost causes and you can add to this

as many as you can name in a single breath without stopping

why did I kneel for eight minutes and 46 seconds at

a BLM event in Swarthmore’s Umoja Park

on Friday, June 19th

as though it mattered

This 71 yr old white man still thinks he can speak
