Driving my Father’s car down Fairfield Street
Driving down my father’s street
in my father’s car
over a year sober
it was like a dream I
never wanted to have
In the right dream
I would be sober,
driving my car
and my father
would be there, waiting, waving
I wish I had become sober, earlier
so we could of talked more
so I could of listened
I don’t know what the words would of been
so long for the waiting
It turns out
that one of the few
possessions of his I have
is this 1982 Mercury Cougar
which only tells me a few things
It turns out
I am driving down this street
and I don’t have any words,
any dreams
to say
I miss my old man a
hell of a lot
but it’s 1989
and I’m doing things
I always knew I couldn’t do
All I know is everything looks the same
from my child times
but everyone else has gotten older,
dead or crazy
feel like I’m the only one
who’s stayed the same
My mother comes out to the door
she still looks the same
and it seems there are still
mountains between us
too heavy
for just two people
to move
Driving down my father’s street
in my father’s car
it was like a dream
I never never never
wanted to have
