Albert

Albert

Note On March 5th I found out

Albert J Raman, a long time friend

had died. This is the revision of my early draft.

We met at the Bacchanal
barstool to barstool
He was married to a gal who
owned an Art Gallery
I was married to Poetry and
the Bottle
We became friends

We became friends
He was the Lawyer for our
Poetry Group, the late somewhat lamented
Poets and Prophets
He also joined our motley crew
of activists, Poets, and others
going to the local minor
league baseball circuit
eating fan food, talking politics

Once his divorce became final
once she said she loved Art more than him
and Art didn’t even stand for Arthur
Albert was still a person
just never the same one

Albert was still a person
just never the same one
I always wanted to tell him
a man never gets it right with the first one
sometimes not the second
sometimes…..
it’s not the woman

Sometimes it’s not the man
after some years I got sober
I ended up with the right woman
I wondered how things
happened the way they did
for me
and never for him

and never for him
when you find the
wrong woman
on a too regular basis
not that that killed him

not that that killed him
it didn’t make his life longer
braver stronger
there was nothing to tell him
no danger he would listen

No danger he would listen
Keep thinking the words should come
or the tears
or the screams
but there’s only these words
no better than silence
no louder than silence
