Poems from Ecuador Series in a moment

In 1912, when the parents of my parents

left Imperial Anti-semitic Anti-peasant Russia

and then to  Hamburg Migration Center

a century later we visit, see question #10

 Are you an Anarchist?

Are you an Anarchist?

They answered no, being peasants but not dumb

being peasants but not dumb

and thus to Brazil, Philadelphia and Wilmington

and thus to Brazil, Philadelphia and Wilmington

In Quito, the Spanish Terrorists had golden churches built

Inside one, we marveled at the beauty, wondered

how many Indigenous lives were lost

how many Indigenous lives were lost

what was the price of this beauty

what was the price of this beauty

and the price of the Lebensraum

required by Americans from the Native Peoples

who did not develop an effective anti-immigrant policy

until way too late

until way too late

is that when we agree to live our hopes not our fears

live our hopes not our fears

lets the refugees in

and send the fear and hatred out
