Last night I had a Lamont Dream

Last night I had a Lamont Dream

Maybe it’s the photo

Maybe it’s the time

time was time is

I can never drink again since Bacchanal closed

but I can dream

It was smoky smoky smoky

and Lamont was declaiming

Something Broke Loose

and we said part of it in unison

having burned it in our brain

And we knew then he would win the Pew

and be Poet Laureate of a new America

a free America

a you can be who you want to be America

a post-War America a post Police State America

a post phone tap America

Beautiful young men would come to the B

asking for Lamont

some of us would come up to them

he’s not available, but we’re friends of his

Beautiful young women would come to the B

some of us would slide up to them

He’s busy, we’re not

Some of us wrote disposable Poems

Lamont did not

Poems for the night for the reason for the season

to get laid or paid

Lamont never did

I’ve always loved Lamont

just for his being Lamont

only wanting to love him

not to be a lover

therein lies madness

I’ve always loved Lamont

but that one night’s dream makes me

say it
