It was the year nineteen and seventy-For Sarah

It was the year nineteen and seventy

For my daughter

Sarah Ann Small-in Minneapolis

I don’t even remember how I got there

half the time, bus, hitch, walk, fly

third house from the corner

didn’t remember that factoid, for years, for years

Nixon, Vietnam, Electric Life

Times that were more than now

and less, and less, times of music

times of words, times-

Grace Sliick famously said

If you remember more than half the sixties

you weren’t really there, really there,

I was there, was there, was-

I do remember being therehere

playing lead tambourine, singing songs

or trying to, writing songs, and thinking

the wallpaper was ‘sposed to move-

When I speak to my daughter

I’ll try and explain the Dead Cheese to her

how they saved me from my broken mind

until I was able to re build re climb re create

Just like she has memory places

I can never enter

we both have places that remain sacred

from their total lack of exit
